The Calgary Pakhtun Association (CPA) has been serving the Pakhtun people from Afghanistan and Pakistan who reside in Calgary and surrounding areas since 2018. We are dedicated to cultural preservation, supporting newcomers, education and training, and social progress across Alberta.

Pakhtun History & Culture
Geographic Distribution & Heritage
The Pakhtuns (also known as Pushtuns, Pakhtuns, or Pathans) are an ethnic group predominantly found in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They possess a rich cultural identity, a distinct language, and a strong tribal structure that together define their unique way of life.
Afghanistan: The largest ethnic group, primarily in eastern, southern, and southwestern regions including Kandahar, Khost, Paktia, Nangarhar, and Ghazni.
Pakistan: Concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan, with significant diaspora communities in Karachi, Lahore, and across Canada.
Lingua Franca of the Pakhtun People
Pakhtuns speak Pashto, an Eastern Iranian language that serves as a core element of their cultural identity. Its rich literary tradition plays an essential role in preserving ancestral heritage across two primary dialects:
Eastern Pashto
Spoken primarily in Pakistan (Peshawar, Swat, Mardan)

Spoken primarily in Afghanistan (Kandahar, Helmand)
The Code of Pakhtunwali
Pakhtun culture is deeply governed by the code of conduct known as Pakhtunwali, an ancient set of ethical principles that serves as the moral backbone of Pakhtun social life.

(Council of Elders)The traditional consultative council where respected community elders resolve disputes and reach decisions through democratic consensus.

Traditional community gathering space where social interaction, hospitality, and consensus dialogue take place. Recreated by CPA in Calgary.
The Attan Dance (اتڼ)
Ancient circular folk dance performed in unison to the rhythm of the Dhol, symbolizing unity, equality, and celebration.
Rubab & Music (رباب)
The soul-stirring instrument of classical Pashto ghazals, accompanied by the Tabla and Mangai in poetry sessions.
Pakhtun Cuisine (خواړه)
Celebrated culinary heritage including Kabuli Pulao, Chapli Kebabs, Shinwari dishes, and aromatic Peshawari Qahwa tea.

Ahmad Shah Durrani (Baba-e-Afghan)
احمد شاه درانی (بابا)The visionary founder of the modern Afghan Empire in 1747. Renowned as Baba (father of the nation), he united diverse tribes into a formidable sovereign state and was himself a gifted poet of love and patriotic longing for the homeland.
Khushal Khan Khattak
خوشحال خان خټکThe celebrated warrior-poet, philosopher, and chieftain who championed Pakhtun unity and fierce independence against imperial tyranny. His voluminous poetry spans martial valor, philosophy, nature, chivalry, and statecraft.
Abdur Rahman Baba
عبدالرحمن باباThe beloved Sufi saint and Nightingale of Pashto poetry. Revered across all social strata for his universal message of divine love, humility, human equality, compassion, and spiritual transcendence.
Khan Abdul Ghani Khan
غني خانThe revolutionary philosopher-poet, sculptor, and intellectual known as 'Lewanai Falsafi' (The Mad Philosopher). His poetry celebrated human freedom, raw emotion, artistic ecstasy, and questioning conventional dogmas.
Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan)
خان عبدالغفار خان (باچا خان)The legendary leader who founded the Khudai Khidmatgar (Servants of God) movement. He mobilized hundreds of thousands of Pakhtuns in nonviolent resistance, education reform, women's empowerment, and social uplift.
